Lord Strathcona’s Horse regiment
The Liberation Monument on the Laan in Nunspeet at the former town hall is a stone built of red brick with an embedded plaque of black natural stone. The Canadian regiment liberated Nunspeet from Harderwijk on 19 April 1945. Almost simultaneously, the English regiment arrived from the other side of Nunspeet. It was one of the last actions of Lord Strathcona’s Horse in the Netherlands.
That is why Nunspeet was the ideal place to erect a monument to mark the 100th anniversary of the regiment. On 19 April 2000, this monument was unveiled by Lieutenant General W. A. Milroy, then commander of Lord Strathcona’s Horse. He did this together with C. de Kovel, then mayor of Nunspeet.
The duo had to work a bit during the unveiling, because the monument was well wrapped. The liberation of Nunspeet is commemorated at this monument every year on 19 April. This is done with the cooperation of veterans and students from Nunspeet schools.
