North Veluwe Art Museum
The Noord-Veluws Art Museum: a unique museum that provides a wonderful insight into Nunspeet's rich past as an artists' colony (1880-1950).
It was precisely at a time of emerging industry and urbanisation that the beauty of nature and life close to nature was discovered. Following in the footsteps of the famous Barbizon artists' colony near Paris, artists' colonies sprang up all over Europe during the 19th century. In the Netherlands, artists from The Hague and Amsterdam set out to find new inspiration in unspoilt places in and around Nunspeet and Elspeet. An artists' colony formed there at the end of the 19th century. From that moment on, the Veluwe became increasingly popular as a tourist destination. The beauty of unspoilt nature and rural life became an attractive alternative for city dwellers who stayed here temporarily or for longer periods. At the end of the 19th century, a group of artists settled in Nunspeet and Elspeet. The artists were inspired by Impressionism, among other things, and often painted in the open air. Characteristic features include loose brushstrokes and attention to colour and light. There was great demand for these paintings, both in Dutch cities and abroad.
Ultimately, more than two hundred visual artists worked in this region between 1880 and 1950. Well-known painters from the Northern Veluwe include Herman van der Weele, Arthur Briët, Willy Martens, Edzard Koning, Jan van Vuuren, Ben Viegers, Jos Lussenburg, Frans Huysmans and Chris ten Bruggen Kate.
Many female artists also lived and worked in the municipality of Nunspeet. Think of ...
