Veluwemeer Water Sports Association
A number of initiators wanted to organise sailing in Nunspeet and founded the Veluwemeer Water Sports Association on 16 February 1959. The association has around 100 members and focuses on providing sailing training, which mainly introduces young people to water sports.
Since 2004, the association has had a beautiful location on the so-called surfing beach near Nunspeet on Lake Veluwe. It is a unique spot on the (safe) shallow part of the lake. The current association has a number of fixed programme elements and recurring activities.
For young people, there is Optimist sailing and for the youngest children, there is the Otter Club, a varied programme with a range of water sports activities. The instructors are all trained internally, and the experienced Optimist sailors play an important supporting role within the Otter Club alongside the instructors.
The first two weeks of the summer holidays are great fun, with “summer camps” for children aged 7-10 following a daily programme focused on Optimist sailing.
On Wednesday evenings, their recognisable blue clubhouse is the starting point for adult members to row together on the water. Afterwards, a beer or glass of wine, a snack and a good conversation at sunset characterise the friendly atmosphere within the club.
For a number of years now, the club has had a genuine “smooth 4+” called the Anton Bom, and WVVeluwemeer facilitates this independent activity for a number of enthusiastic rowers. The instruction room and changing room are used for training sessions. The club now has a “fleet” of eight “Optimists”. Beginner sailors can take training courses without having to purchase a boat straight away. For sailors who have outgrown the Optimist, training is provided in fast single-handed boats, such as Laser and Splash.
Members' boats can be stored on the premises. There is currently space for around 30 boats, which means that there is always “life” at the club.
The season ends with a sailing certificate. The club provides sailing training that meets the requirements of CWO/Watersportverbond. Because different levels are used, a training programme lasting several years is possible. In other words, children from the age of six or seven can start and develop into experienced sailors.
