Wildlife on the Veluwe

Are you adventurous and do you love pure nature? Then you don’t want to miss this. In the beautiful forest and heathland areas, you can discover the Veluwe wildlife on foot or by bike under the guidance of experienced guides. Of course without a dog, because otherwise you won’t see a ‘cat’. Of course you can also go for a nice walk or bike ride yourself and encounter wildlife, but with a guide the chance is just that little bit greater.
You can go game hunting with a guide if you join one of our excursions; see the list at the bottom of this page.

Game viewing screens

You can go game hunting in the forests around Vierhouten/Gortel on your own. There are a number of wildlife viewing screens in the municipality of Nunspeet, at the following locations:

  • ♦ On the Tongerenseweg just outside Vierhouten
  • ♦ On the Noorderheide between Vierhouten and Elspeet

There is a reasonable chance that you will come face to face with wild boars, deer and more if you go walking or cycling around Vierhouten, on the Stakenberg or in the Kroondomeinen.
For beautiful walking or cycling routes with a lot of chance of seeing wildlife, we recommend the Kroondomeinenroute or the Wilde Zwijnenroute.

Walking and cycling in the wild

In addition to being a nature guide, Gerrit Rekers is also a professional nature photographer. He guides nature tours and gives slide presentations. Do you want to see nature and wildlife through his eyes? Then sign up for one of his tours that depart from Elspeet. You can find these in our agenda. Gerrit Rekers has already provided binoculars from the German top brand Steiner. In addition to shorter walks and bike rides, there is also a 25-kilometre wildlife bike ride. Be careful. This is quite challenging! You can register for this at nature tours.
It is also possible to book a private tour with Gerrit. Read more about this option here.

Rutting season and bellowing

The mating season of the red deer takes place in September and early October. Also called the rut. The males ‘bellow’ in the hope of attracting the attention of a female. You won’t believe your ears! The call echoes through the forest and over the heath. Special ‘rutting excursions’ are organised during this period. You can find these in the agenda and on the page booking excursions!
