Nunspeet Remembers
On June 6, 2024, D-day will be 80 years ago. This day marked the start of the largest sea invasion ever. 130,000 soldiers landed in Normandy to liberate Western Europe. From September 1944 to May 1945, the province of Gelderland was on the front line in this battle, which began with Operation Market Garden. The Veluwe was eventually liberated between April 12 and 24, and the German surrender followed shortly afterwards. The municipality of Nunspeet was liberated on April 19.
In recent years, many QR codes have been placed at Stolpersteine, memorial sites and monuments from WWII. This way, we can always commemorate the events from this war. This year, we are commemorating 80 years of freedom. A beautiful program has been put together for this and the Nunspeet Memorial Tour will be reissued.

Experience and Realize
During the Second World War, many things happened in the municipality of Nunspeet. For example, planes crashed in seven places, killing crews. Memorial columns have been placed at these ‘crash sites’. There are also war memorials in all the centres.
In the forests near Vierhouten is Het Verscholen Dorp, where three replica huts can now be seen. The poem ‘Stil’, which can be read there, is impressive and beautiful.
In all kinds of other places in the municipality of Nunspeet you can see or read something special, so that you can realise how precious our peace is now. For example, there are various Stolpersteine.
Program on the Veluwe
In the context of 80 years of freedom, numerous activities and events are organized throughout the Veluwe. These commemorations bring the tragedy of the war to life and at the same time emphasize the value of the freedom in which we live today. From impressive exhibitions and walking routes along historical locations to lectures and educational programs for young and old—there is something for everyone to experience. Curious about the program? Visit veluwe.nl/vrijheid for more information.
